Cougars Fall To Grossmont, 38-14, In Final Non-Conference Game of The Season
The College of the Canyons football team gained 320 yards of total offense on Saturday, but was held to only two touchdowns by Grossmont College, as the Cougars suffered their first road loss of the season, falling to Grossmont 38-14 in their final non-conference game of the season.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons football team gained 320 yards of total offense on Saturday, but was held to only two touchdowns by Grossmont College, as the Cougars suffered their first road loss of the season, falling to Grossmont 38-14 in their final non-conference game of the season.
The Cougars defense held the Griffins to only a touchdown in the first quarter, but ended giving up 31 points in the next three quarters. They allowed 522 yards of total offense, which is the most they have given up all year.
The COC offense notched 121 yards rushing and 199 yards passing, but Canyons only scored once in the first half and once in the second half.
The COC offense didn't score until the second quarter, with an eight-play 79-yard drive, was capped off with an 18-yard rushing touchdown from Jamie Wilson.
COC went into halftime down 17-7, but Rini came out firing with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tucker on their very first drive of the second half, which brought the Cougars within three points, 17-14.
Unfortunately from that point on, the Griffins outscored the Cougars 21-0 and never looked back. The offense had to punt numerous times and the defense couldn't make any stops.
This gave the Cougars their fourth straight loss against Grossmont, dating back to 2005.
Freshmen linebacker Jake Wolley and freshmen defensive lineman Kimlyn Teague both recorded nine tackles each, while sophomore safety Milton Gilchrist had a sack and freshmen linebacker Charlie Hosea had an interception.
Sophomore quarterback Chris Rini went 12-of-23 for 170 yards and a touchdown, however, he threw an interception and was sacked five times.
Freshmen wide receiver Travion Tucker had 44 yards receiving and one touchdown and sophomore wide receiver Chris Rivas led the team in receiving yards with 52.
Sophomore running back Jamie Wilson was very productive on the ground, as he rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown. Rini also rushed for 20 yards.
COC will head into their bye week with a record a 3-2 record. The Cougars will play their first conference game of the year Saturday, Oct. 15, at El Camino College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
