No. 7 Canyons Drops 17-10 Home Finale to No. 14 Moorpark
COC QB Matthew Moore finished the game 16-of-28 for 115 yards passing and a TD in his first start for the Cougars.
Coming off a tough loss the previous week No. 7 College of the Canyons fell short again on Saturday, losing 17-10 to No. 14 Moorpark College in the Cougars' final regular season home game.
The Cougars had several chances to take control of the game, but were unable to convert first downs when they needed them most.
The contest also represented the first career start for COC quarterback Matthew Moore, who filled in for regular starter Devon Dunn.
The Cougars could only muster 143 yards of total offense and lost the time of possession battle, controlling the ball for roughly 25 minutes.
Canyons found itself down 10 points at the half, but was able to get on the board early in the second half.
After holding Moorpark to a three-and-out, the Cougars started their first drive of the half with favorable field position at their own 45-yard line.
After a pass interference penalty against Moorpark, COC running back Jalen Logan stormed down the field on a 36-yard run down to set Canyons up deep in Raider territory.
Two plays later, Moore found wide receiver Connor Byrnes for a five-yard touchdown pass. After an Alec Chadwick extra point, the Cougars were back in the game and trailed by only three points 10-7.
Moore finished the game completing 16-of-28 passes for 115 yards passing and a touchdown.
After both teams traded possessions in the third quarter, Moorpark scored a touchdown early in the fourth to add to its lead and make it a 17-7 game.
With just under 10 minutes left in regulation, the Cougars marched downfield and were able to cut into the Raider lead with a 36-yard field goal by Chadwick, making it 17-10.
The scoring drive, however, took more than five minutes off the clock and the Cougars still needed another possession to try and draw even.
Eventually, Canyons forced a Moorpark fourth down after COC linebacker Austin Davenport stopped Raider quarterback Kado Brown for a two-yard loss on third down.
With 40 seconds left in regulation Moorpark was forced to punt. However, on the play COC punt returner Isaiah Foster couldn't get a handle on the ball and fumbled, with Moorpark recovering to essentially end the game.
College of the Canyons is now 6-3 overall and 3-2 against conference opponents.
Canyons will next travel to Cerritos College at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.
