Bio

Ryan Hourigan is in the midst of a second stint with the Cougars, entering his fifth season overall with the program. He is the team’s defensive live assistant coach, specializing in working with defensive tackles.

Hourigan originally coached for the Cougars from 2000 to 2002, helping Canyons win three conference championships, one Southern California Regional Championships and two bowl games as part of then-head coach Chuck Lyon’s staff.

During that time Hourigan also had the opportunity to coach three Cougars who would go on to become NFL defensive linemen in Isaac Sopoaga (San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots) Jonathan Fanene (Cincinnati Bengals) and Domata Peko (Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos).

In 2004 Hourigan served as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Grant High School in the San Fernando Valley.

He later took a leave of absence from coaching to pursue a career in law enforcement before returning to the COC sidelines in 2017.

As a player, Hourigan played defensive line at Hart High School, then spent a season at L.A. Pierce College where he earned all-conference honors as a freshman in 1993. He would later play a sophomore season at L.A. Valley College in 1997, again earning all-conference honors.

Hourigan eventually transferred to California State University, Northridge where he played two more seasons and earned a bachelor of arts in sociology.

A member of the LAPD, Hourigan resides in Valencia with his wife Kelly and kids Kayla, Brett and Taylor.
