Cougars Come in Second After Card Off, Wolf Wins Individual Title
The College of the Canyons men’s golf team came in second place at Monday’s California Community College Athletic Association's Men's Golf State Championship at the Victoria Club, following a card off with Riverside City College.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The College of the Canyons men's golf team came in second place at Monday's California Community College Athletic Association's Men's Golf State Championship at the Victoria Club, following a card off with Riverside City College. Sophomore Sidney Wolf earned the college's first individual medalist who posted a 5-under par 139.
Canyons led by three strokes after one round, but relinquished that lead to a surging Riverside City College squad that tied the score after 36 holes. With the two teams holding a 734 at the end of the tournament, the two teams went to a card off and COC was pushed to second place after Riverside's sixth player's score was one stroke better than COC's golfer.
College of the Canyons held the early lead after the morning round with a team score of 365 while Riverside posted a 368 and San Jose (370) and Chabot (372) close behind.
But Riverside's Eric Cross and Josh Roquet both shot 1-under-par 71s in the afternoon to lead the Tigers back into a tie with Canyons with 36-hole team totals of 734.
The tiebreaker came down to the sixth golfer on each team and Riverside's Chad Hambright carded a 78 in the afternoon round while Canyon's Mike Stewart finished with a 79.
The 2012 state championship was also decided by a card off and the Cougars were on the losing end of the decision and came in second to College of the Desert, after the Roadrunners No. 6 golfer also lead Canyons golfer by one stroke.
Wolf led a foursome of golfers who scored under par for the afternoon and shot the lowest round of the day in the second round, carding a 68. He finished the state's top tournament with a 139, after shooting 71 in the early round. The Frenchman was named All-State for his efforts.
Edouard Fiszel notched a 4-over par 148 (72-76) to come in 13th place on the par-72 course. Clay Chatterley improved on his first-round score of 75 to come in 16th place and tallying a second round of 74. Aaron Grimes turned in a 21st-place performance with a 6-over par 150 (74-76) and Jonas Guriby Dahl came in 24th with a 151 (76-75). Stewart rounded out the Cougar's scoring with an 8-over par 152 (73-39).
