Fresh off a shutout road win the night before, College of the Canyons nearly posted back-to-back wins but instead settled for a 1-1 draw vs. conference opponent Antelope Valley College on Wednesday.
Canyons (2-10-2, 1-2-1) claimed a 2-0 road win at Bakersfield College on Tuesday to snap a seven-game losing streak. Wednesday's game vs. AVC had originally been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25, but had to be postponed due to recent wildfires in the area.
The Cougars looked to be inspired by their recent victory with a strongopening half that saw the team record seven shots and earn two corner kicks.
In the 42nd minute COC freshman midfielder Jeysen Rodriguez put Canyons ahead 1-0 on a PK goal. The score was the first of the season for Rodriguez who has appeared in nine games for the Cougars.
COC goalkeeper Kian Bensend also found an early rhythm highlighted to a pair of key stops early in the match. The sophomore finished the game with six saves.
Canyons seemed to control the tempo throughout the half, taking a 1-0 lead into the break.
Antelope Valley (5-5-6, 0-1-3) was able to put together a number of scoring chances, but the play of the Canyons defenders and Bensend in goal combined to keep the Marauders at bay.
Herber Monzon aided the cause with a key defensive save after Bensend found himself out of position following a save. Jake Erazo also broke up a number of plays in the boxto preserve the advantage.
After a contentious back-and-forth exchange across the final 15 minutes of the match, AVC eventually got on the board with a scoring kick from Rodrigo Martinez in the 87th minute.
That score tied the game at 1-1, which is where things ended.
With just four games remaining on the schedule Canyons will next take the pitch vs. Citrus College at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.
