After splitting a road doubleheader over the weekend, the Cougars returned to Whitten Field on Tuesday and used a combined shutout from hurlers Megan Wilson and Joy Veloz to blank visiting Cuesta College 4-0.
The win for College of the Canyons (4-6) marked the first on its home field this season and also featured the debut of Veloz, who is expected to provide the Cougars pitching staff with a boost moving forward.
COC freshman Megan Wilson (2-1) got the start, and eventually earned the win, after pitching the first five innings, allowing one hit and issuing a walk in an otherwise flawless outing.
The Cougars pushed the first run across on a nicely executed double-steal that resulted in sophomore Katie Clinkunbroomer touching home plate for a 1-0 score.
In the next inning Sienna Vannoy homered and Clinkunbroomer added an RBI-single to put the score at 3-0.
Veloz entered the game to work the sixth and seventh innings, striking out three batters along the way.
Cuesta (3-9) stuck with starter Sam Cabrera through the duration. Cabrera allowed eight hits and two walks and was charged with four earned runs in the loss. Cuesta mustered just three hits on the day.
Over the weekend Canyons split a road double header hosted by defending state champion Cypress College. The Cougars picked up a 6-1 victory over Pasadena City College in the morning game, with Wilson getting the win after throwing five and 2/3 innings of relief. Danielle Chatman led Canyons at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Rena Edwards finished 1-for-2 and also scored a pair of runs.
The Cougars then lost 4-2 to Cypress in the afternoon affair. Chatman added two more hits and another run, and Edwards tripled and scored to provide the offense for COC. Wilson took the loss after allowing four runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.
