Canyons Finds Success at WSC Swim Meet No. 1
Team of Siris Pinget, Alyssa San Lucas, Georgia Rios and Alyssa Velasquez win 200-yard freestyle relay.
The College of the Canyons swim team enjoyed a great outing on Friday, as COC hosted Western State Conference (WSC) swim meet No. 1 at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center on Friday.
The meet included swimmers from Allan Hancock, Cuesta, L.A. Pierce and Ventura College. For scoring purposes, the four schools squared of against each other in a dual-meet format.
The COC women's team won three of its four matchups, but narrowly lost to L.A. Pierce 440-399.
However, the Cougars ended the day with an exciting first place finish in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay. In the final event of the meet, the team of Alyssa San Lucas, Georgia Rios, Siris Pinget and Alyssa Velasquez defeated the Pierce squad by three one-hundredths of a second (1:54.93 to 1:54.96).
COC freshman Alexis Kearns, fresh of her dual wins at WSC dive meet No.1 the previous day, helped Canyons take second place in the women's 200-yard medley relay, and later took third place in the women's 50-yard freestyle event
Canyons sophomore Tyson Brandi also took first place in the women's 100-yard butterfly.
COC had some strong performances on the men's side, but managed to win just one of its four matchups.
Sophomore Philip Wong led the way for Canyons, finishing first in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking second in the 100-yard butterfly and swimming anchor for the 200-yard medley relay team, which took second place.
COC swimmers Naphong Aneksirikul and Garrett McQueen finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke.
Canyons will next swim in WSC meet No. 2 at L.A. Valley College on Saturday, March 21.
