COC Swim Team Finishes Strong at Cuesta Invite

The College of the Canyons swim and dive team competed in the annual Cuesta College Invitational over the weekend, with both the men's and women's teams turning in strong performances.
A total of 23 teams from across the state participated in the event held Mar. 11-12.
The COC men's team finished in ninth place, with the women's team ranking in 14th.
COC freshman William Karren was the leader for the Cougars with a team-high 46 event points. The Saugus High School product placed fourth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 24.80 seconds.
He then followed up that effort with a fifth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (52.14 seconds) and a sixth place mark in the 50-yard freestyle (22.28 seconds).
Sophomore Naphong Aneksirikul had the highest individual finish of the weekend with his third place time of 30.26 seconds in the 50-yard breaststroke.
Aneksirikul also took eighth place in the 100-yard backstroke (57.77 seconds).
Sophomore Ryan Swindell placed eighth in the 50-yard backstroke event with a time of 29.23 seconds.
On the women's side, sophomore Jessica Yamauchi had a pair of ninth place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (2:25.80) and 100-yard IM (1:09.17) to lead Canyons.
Sophomore Breanna Hummitzsch also placed ninth in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 36.42 seconds.
Canyons will next compete in Western State Conference (WSC) swim meet No. 2 hosted by Santa Barbara City College on Saturday, March 19.
