No. 7 Cougars Edge No. 2 San Bernardino In Playoffs
The No. 7 College of the Canyons women's basketball three starting guards combined for 48 points and Canyons edged No. 2 San Bernardino Valley 69-67 in the third round of the California Community College Athletic Association Women's Basketball Regional Playoffs.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The No. 7 College of the Canyons women's basketball three starting guards combined for 48 points and Canyons edged No. 2 San Bernardino Valley 69-67 in the third round of the California Community College Athletic Association Women's Basketball Regional Playoffs. The Cougars will now travel to No. 3 Mt. SAC (27-3) for the fourth round of the playoffs. The winner of the game will earn a spot in the state tournament at Ventura College on March 11-13.
After closing the first half at a 34-34 standstill, COC opened up a 14-point lead, 50-64. San Bernardino Valley would come back on COC by tying up the game for the sixth time, 67-67, with 1:32 left in the contest. Sophomore guard Dominique Turner gave the Cougars their win on a layup with six seconds left after Jazzmyn Davis missed two of her free throws with 34 seconds to go.
COC shot well, connecting on 28-of-56 (50.0 percent) from the field, and was 8-of-10 (80.0 percent) from beyond the arc, indluding a perfect 4-of-4 from the 3-point line in the second half.
The Cougars struggled from the free throw line, making only 5-of-12 (55.6 percent) while the Bearcubs were able to tally 5-of-10 (50.0 percent).
Canyons was led by sophomore guard Kelli Lewis' 17 points on a 6-of-11 shooting night and went 5-of-7 from the 3-point line. Guard Tinky Dahte added 16 points and six rebounds and Turner had a team-high 10 rebounds and 15 points. She also dished out five rebounds.
The Cougars will now travel to Mt. SAC on Saturday, March 5. COC beat Mt. SAC earlier in the season 75-67 in the second round of the Ventura Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
