Lady Cougars Earn 81-78 Win Over Tourney Host East L.A. College
Canyons will next face Mission College of Santa Clara in the Husky Classic championship game.
The College of the Canyons women's basketball team beat tournament host East Los Angeles College 81-78 to advance to the championship game of the annual ELAC Husky Classic.
Canyons (9-4) trailed by three points headed into the fourth quarter before an 8-2 run by the Huskies forced COC into high-pressure mode. The Lady Cougars found their stride, however, putting together an 11-2 run of their own to eventually tie the game at 69 apiece.
The late push by COC helped head coach Greg Herrick and the Lady Cougars close out the game, earn the victory and stamp their ticket to the tourney's championship game.
Canyons was led by sophomore forward Monica Friedl who registered a game-high 28 points. Friedl's stat line also added 19 rebounds, a block and an assist.
COC sophomore forward Hannah Green also finished with a double-double, tallying 12 points and 14 rebounds vs. the Huskies.
Sophomore guard Brittany Martin came up with nine points and five assists off the bench for Canyons.
COC will return to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, as the Lady Cougars tip-off vs. Mission College of Santa Clara in the Husky Classic championship game.
