Lady Cougars Get First Round Win at ELAC Husky Classic
Canyons defeats San Bernardino College 71-57 as four players score in double digits.
The College of the Canyons women's basketball team defeated San Bernardino College 71-57 in the opening round of the East Los Angeles College Husky Classic.
The win places Canyons (8-4) in the tournament's winner's bracket setting Canyons up with an opportunity to compete for the tourney championship.
The Lady Cougars had four players score in double digits vs. San Bernardino, while two players finished with double-doubles.
Freshman guard Marina Rojas led Canyons offensively with a game-high 18 points. Rojas also added eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
COC sophomore forward Monica Friedl added 14 points and 11 rebounds to help Canyons get the victory. Friedl also tied for a game-high six blocks.
Sophomore forward Hannah Green also posted a double-double with her 13 points and 11 rebounds, while matching Friedl's six blocks.
Freshman guard Sara Ward came off the bench with 11 points, four rebounds, one block and an assist.
Canyons will next play tourney host East Los Angeles College in the tournament semifinals at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28.
