Canyons Gets 98-74 Blowout Win vs. Cosumnes River College
The Lady Cougars will advance to the winner's bracket of ‘Solano Showdown’ tournament.
FAIRFIELD, Calif. — Monica Friedl's 29 points led the way for the College of the Canyons women's basketball team, as the Lady Cougars put together a 98-74 blowout victory over Cosumnes River College in day one of the 'Solano Showdown' hosted by Solano Community College on Friday night.
The victory snapped a brief two-game losing streak for Canyons, and evened the team's overall record to 3-3.
Friedl was one of four Cougars who posted a double-digit scoring effort for head coach Greg Herrick. The 98 points posted by the Lady Cougars also represented a season-high scoring output
Friedl's complete stat line also included 14 rebounds on a 14-of-24 shooting night.
Marino Rojas and Hannah Green also scored in double figures for Canyons, with 12 points each.
COC freshmen Sara Ward and Kianna Cross also had strong games, with Cross finishing with 14 points while Ward added 11 points — all off the bench.
Green led the team with 16 rebounds and finished with nine blocks – one block short of recording a triple-double.
The Lady Cougars dominated in nearly all aspects of the game, particularly in rebounding and defense. Canyons outrebounded Cosumnes 61-37 and held the Hawkeyes to a 30.2 field goal percentage.
COC also distributed the ball well on offense racking up 32 assists on 40 made baskets.
The Cougars next play Feather River College in round two action of the 'Solano Showdown' beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12.
