Canyons Drops Round 1 Game at Ventura-Kiwanis Tourney

VENTURA, Calif. — The College of the Canyons women's basketball team lost its first game of the Ventura-Kiwanis Tournament, falling 70-42 to Diablo Valley College on Friday night.
The 28-point defeat, which snapped a brief two-game winning streak, is the largest of the young season for the Lady Cougars.
COC's woes stemmed from inability to control the ball, as Canyons committed 30 turnovers in the contest.
Canyons was also outrebounded by Diablo Valley 38-26, representing only the second time Coach Herrick's team has been outrebounded by opponents this season.
The Lady Cougars were led by sophomore Monica Friedl's 13 points on a 5-of-12 shooting night. She also collected four rebounds and dished out two assists.
Sophomore Hannah Green provided some defensive highlights despite the final score. She was the team's leading rebounder off the bench, grabbing 10 boards, while swatting away eight shots and coming away with five steals in the losing effort.
As a team, the Lady Cougars struggled shooting from the field making only 34 percent of their shots and making only 1-of-8 three-point attempts.
Canyons will next play Contra Costa College in tits second round game of the Ventura-Kiwanis Tournament at Ventura College on Saturday. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
