No. 8 Canyons Keeps Win Streak Alive With 75-70 Victory at Citrus
COC freshman guard Marina Rojas finished with a season-high 20 points on a 7-of-13 shooting night.
GLENDORA, Calif. — The No. 8 ranked College of the Canyons women's basketball team continued its hot streak by defeating Citrus College 75-70 on Saturday afternoon for its ninth straight victory.
COC looked to be in trouble early on as the Lady Cougars allowed Citrus to get off to an 8-0 run to begin the game.
However, COC freshman guard Marina Rojas helped put a stop to that first quarter run by posting a season-high 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Rojas also dished out eight assists and had five steals in 36 minutes of play.
Once again the Lady Cougars featured their dual threat frontcourt of sophomores Hannah Green and Monica Friedl, who bolstered the winning effort by providing stat lines that have become routine this season.
Green nearly tallied a triple-double scoring 20 points, grabbing 12 boards and swatting nine shots in her 35 minutes of action. She also had five steals and two assists.
Saturday's game marked Green's eight consecutive double-double efforts and the second time she missed a triple-double by just one block.
Friedl grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds in addition to 13 points and three blocks.
The game was close headed into the final minutes of the fourth quarter with both teams trading the lead. With COC down 70-68, Green's back-to-back baskets put the Lady Cougars in the lead for good giving Canyons a 72-70 lead with less than three minutes to go in regulation.
The win comes despite being COC being outrebounded 51-41 by the Owls. The game marked only the third time in the last 10 games in which COC has lost the battle of the boards.
Head coach Greg Herrick's squad now sits atop the Western State Conference, South standings at 4-0, with an overall record of 14-4.
Canyons will next host West L.A. College (5-12, 1-3) at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Cougar Cage.
