Rojas' Triple-Double Lifts Canyons over West L.A 57-40
Sophomore guard Marina Rojas finished the game with 20 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and six assists.
Sophomore point guard Marina Rojas recorded her fourth straight triple-double and the College of the Canyons women's basketball team defeated host West L.A. College 57-40 to keep its postseason hopes alive.
The Lady Cougars established a slim 27-24 lead heading into halftime before seemingly getting serious in the third quarter. COC shot a combined 46.2 percent in the third quarter while limiting West L.A. to just eight points.
It would be more of the same in the final quarter, as the Wildcats shot just 12.5 percent from the floor while settling for eight points.
Rojas finished the game with a stat line of 20 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and six assists to finish just shy of reaching mythical quadruple-double territory.
Over the course of her triple-double streak Rojas is averaging 18.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 11.7 assists, while rarely, if ever, coming off the floor.
She has already recorded five triple-doubles on the season, prompting many around the COC athletic facility to reference NBA star Russell Westbrook when talking about Rojas' game.
The win vs. West L.A. was the third in the last four outings.
Though the Lady Cougars struggled through the early part of the season, things look to be trending upward for COC head coach Greg Herrick's squad.
Canyons is 3-1 in conference play and sits just one game behind Santa Monica College for the conference's top spot. This after going 2-10 in the team's previous 12 games.
Adding to COC's recent resurgence are freshmen Dayna Tanaka who scored 17 points vs. West L.A. to give her a team-leading 15.7 points per game.
Freshman forward Morgan Bizzell is averaging 11.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game after recording six points and 10 rebounds vs. the Wildcats.
Canyons will return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, when the Lady Cougars travel to face L.A. Pierce College.
