VENTURA — Freshman LuLu Salloom scored a game-high 23 points and the Cougars' defense limited Napa College to just 16 second half points, as College of the Canyons stayed unbeaten with an 85-38 win at the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions hosted by Ventura College.
The victory over Napa brings COC head coach Greg Herrick's career win total at Canyons to 595.
Salloom continues to lead a fast-paced Cougars offense that is averaging 83.8 points per game to rank sixth in the state. That frenzied pace also has Canyons second in the state in assists per game at 24.8 each night.
On Thursday, Salloom finished the game 11-of-20 to go with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. She is currently 10th in the state in scoring at 21.5 per game, and has netted at least 16 points in each game this season.
Malia Semana's six assists were a game high, while Danni Diaz pulled down 11 boards to lead all players.
Diamyn Davis ended the game with 17 points and eight rebounds, giving Herrick and the Cougars another weapon in the key. Four of her rebounds came off the offensive glass.
Monique Febles had a nice all-around game with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Justice Walters added 26 solid minutes off the bench to end the night with 17 points in an 8-of-11 effort. She also added five rebounds. Evelin Herrera's seven rebounds in a reserve role helped Canyons win that battle by a 55-37 margin.
Canyons (4-0) limited Napa (2-2) to a paltry nine points in the second quarter, taking a 34-22 lead into the break.
COC was then able to hold Napa to a paltry four points in the third quarter. The Cougars scored 30 points during that same stretch, mostly behind Salloom and Walters.
Napa shot just better than 27 percent for the game compared to a 43.8 percent mark for Canyons. The Storm also committed 29 turnovers to stunt their efforts.
The Cougars move on in the tourney bracket to face Mt. San Antonio College (5-1) at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19. A win on Friday would move COC to the tourney's championship game on Saturday.
