Canyons Nets Big Win Over SBVC, Finishes Tourney 2-1

College of the Canyons competed in the three-day Wild West L.A. Shootout, defeating San Bernadino Valley College 66-11 in the tournament's opening round before finishing the weekend a combined 2-1.
Canyons (3-1) controlled the court from start to finish outshooting SBVC (0-1) to win by a sizable 66-11 advantage. The Cougars posted a 47.6 field goal percentage compared to San Bernadino at just 11.9 percent.
COC opened up a commanding 19-point lead by the end of the first quarter. San Bernadino managed to put up just four points in the second quarter, while Canyons slightly slowed its pace, only adding eight more points.
However, that lull didn't last long. After halftime, the Cougars more than doubled their point total, while only allowing five points to the Wolverines.
COC freshman Amiyah Robinson netted 8-of-11 shots bringing her total to 16 points, the highest on the court.
Canyons sophomore Monique Febles was close behind Robinson with 13 points and freshman Hannah Tolentino finished with 12.
Coming off the Bench, Natasha Surgick came alive tacking on 10 points in a 5-of-9 shooting effort.
SBVC looked to Milesha Boddie-Nolley and Sherri Martinez for their combined 11 points. Boddie-Nolley led the way with seven points.
The Wolverines' scoring deficit can be attributed to COC's 15 steals in the game and an immense 39 total rebounds.
Sophomore LuLu Salloom was responsible for seven of the steals and nine of the rebounds.
In addition, the Cougars were able to capitalize on San Bernadino's 28 turnovers, compared to just nine for Canyons.
On day two of the tournament, COC fell to Ventura College by a 63-52 final score. The Cougars then rebounded to defeat Hartnell College 73-42 to close out their tourney run.
Canyons is back on the court Thursday, Dec. 1 to face tourney host College of the Sequoias at the 46th Annual Gilcrest Tournament being held Dec. 1-3.
The Cougars then return home Wednesday, Dec. 7 vs. Palo Verde College at 7 p.m.
