Cougars Move Past Citrus to Clinch Fourth Straight WSC Title
Sophomore Kelsey Sherry Puts the Cougars Ahead in 58th Minute
Head coach Justin Lundin and the COC women's soccer team are Western State Conference (WSC) South Champions again, after the team clinched its fourth consecutive title with a 1-0 victory over Citrus College on Friday.
COC sophomore Kelsey Sherry scored the lone COC goal in the 58th minute, her sixth of the season, to give Canyons the title and an automatic postseason berth.
Freshman forward Marissa Kneisel registered an assist on the play to give her a team-leading 50 points on the season (18 goals and 14 assists), while Canyons sophomore goalkeeper Priscilla Duron posted four saves to improve her record to 11-2-2, with 10 shutouts and a 0.46 goals against average.
The win marks COC's fifth straight victory, with each coming by way of a shutout.
COC posted an impressive goal differential on the season, scoring 69 goals while allowing just seven scores through 20 games. In fact, the Cougars surrendered multiple goals in just two games this season, the last time coming during Antelope Valley College's 6-2 home loss to Canyons back on Sept. 30.
The COC women's soccer program has now won four straight WSC titles (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) under head coach Justin Lundin, while posting winning seasons all six years under his tenure.
Canyons will next host Saddleback College in the opening round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women's Soccer Regional Playoffs at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, in Cougar Stadium.
