Despite a slow start that saw College of the Canyons trail 1-0 at halftime, a strong defensive effort and timely goal late in the game gave the Cougars they boost needed to pull out a 1-1 draw.
Canyons (1-1-2) was slow to find its rhythm on both sides of the ball as the Cougars surrendered seven shots and struggled to mount much of an offensive attack in the first half.
Moorpark would score its long goal in the 21st minute when Raider forward Eva Madarang finally put one past the goalie to make it a 1-0 game.
The first half ended quietly for the Cougars, and COC continued to play from behind for much of the second half.
However, a late goal by COC sophomore forward Marissa Kneisel in the 80th minute tied the game at 1-1.
Cougar freshman defender Isabella Hochner was credited with an assist on the play.
Canyons will return home to face Mt. SAC in the team's home opener at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.
