Canyons Runs Streak to Five Games in 2-0 Win Over Citrus
The Lady Cougars have not allowed a goal since Sept. 27, having outscored its opponents 20-0 during that stretch.
The College of the Canyons women's soccer team has run its current win streak to five games after claiming a 2-0 conference victory over visiting Citrus College on Friday.
Canyons (10-3-1, 4-0) remained perfect vs. conference opponents, while also posting the team's fifth consecutive shutout.
The Lady Cougars have not allowed a goal since losing 2-1 to Santa Barbara City College on Sept. 27. COC has also outscored its opponents 20-0 during that stretch.
Friday's win also marked the sixth time COC has scored at least three goals in a game this season.
COC sophomore goalkeeper Kianna Hemphill (10-3-1) was credited with the victory after making two saves in the contest. Hemphill now has eight shutouts on her resume, after combining with Dayane do Nascimento on two clean sheets this season.
Offensively, neither team was able to get on the board until late in the second half. Nevertheless, Canyons pressured the Owls throughout, as evidenced by its 27 shots, compared to just two for Citrus.
In the 79th minute, COC freshman defender Daphne Coffey broke the scoreless tie with her first goal of the season on an unassisted play.
A few moments later sophomore midfielder Kailey Marquez put her name in the scorebook with an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute, good for her second of the season.
That would be all the offense needed as Canyons held on to improve to 4-0 in the Western State Conference (WSC), East Division. The Lady Cougars currently sit in first place, six points ahead of second place Citrus (9-6, 2-1).
Canyons has not lost a conference match since falling 1-0 to Santa Monica College back on Oct. 28, 2014. Head coach Justin Lundin's team is an impressive 20-0-3 during that span.
COC entered the season as winners of five straight WSC, South titles, and will look to continue that tradition in the newly formed WSC, East in 2016.
Canyons will next host Bakersfield College at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.
