No. 5 Canyons Clinches Third Straight Conference Championship
Cougars defeat visiting Santa Monica College 3-0 on 'Sophomore Night'
No. 5 College of the Canyons defeated visiting Santa Monica College 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-23) on Friday night, to clinch the program's third straight Western State Conference (WSC), South championship.
Canyons (21-2, 11-0) earned the victory on the program's annual 'Sophomore Night.' Prior to the match a pre-game ceremony honoring the team's eight sophomores was held.
COC sophomore outside hitter Brooke Garelick and freshman outside hitter Emily Bible each totaled match-high 10 kills. Together, the duo combined for a .514 hitting percentage.
Across the court, COC sophomore opposite hitter Alize Bricot and Maddy Regan combined for seven kills and a .313 hitting percentage.
COC sophomore setter Katie Rutecki led the match with 31 assists, and three combined blocks.
Sophomore middle blockers Erica Magee and Camari McWright combined for a .400 hitting percentage.
Freshman middle hitter Alexa Hesseldenz also had a big night, adding seven kills and an outstanding .875 hitting percentage. Hesseldenz also registered three total blocks.
COC sophomore libero Chelsea Corn led Canyons with 11 digs on the night, and sophomore defensive specialist Alexis Serafin led the team with two aces.
Canyons will next travel to No. 22 Bakersfield College (15-10, 8-3) on Wednesday Nov. 18, for the team's regular season finale.
