No. 18 Canyons Takes Streak to Eight, Defeats Citrus 3-0

No. 18 College of the Canyons moved its win streak to eight games with a 3-0 sweep over visiting Citrus College at the Cougar Cage on Friday night. Set scores were 25-17, 25-21, 25-16.
Canyons (13-7, 7-0) remained undefeated vs. Western State Conference (WSC), South Division opponents and also won its 24th straight set in the process. The eight-match win streak has helped the Cougars hold onto the conference top spot. COC now begins the week two games ahead of Santa Monica (13-7, 5-2) and Bakersfield (9-7, 5-2) in the second-place spot.
Aly Grodell continues to play at a high level and added to her conference-leading kill total with a game-high 11 kills on a .562 hitting percentage. Grodell is currently tied for the conference lead in kills (161) and ranks fourth with 2.68 kills per set. Her season hitting percentage of .370 also leads the WSC, South.
Kaelyn White finished the game with 10 kills to go with two aces, three block assists and two digs. White's season kills total (151) ranks fourth in the conference while her rate of 2.85 kills per set is third.
COC sophomore Brianna Botello added eight kills to the Canyons attack. She currently ranks third on the team at 137.
Meanwhile, Sabrina Sveiven was a defensive standout for the Cougars, finishing with a game-high 17 digs. Sveiven is third on the club with 95 digs.
Jordan Nunez provided a big boost for Canyons with a game-high 24 assists to go alongside six kills, two aces, two block assists and a pair of digs. Nunez hit .556 for the match. Nunez ranks second in the conference with 414 assists, an average of 6.18 per set.
Canyons combined to hit .309 for the match with five aces and 11 combined blocks in the game.
Citrus (6-14, 2-5) has now lost four of its last five matches. The Owls hit just .060 for the match with three aces and one block.

Upcoming Schedule
Canyons will hit the road for a pair of conference road games, first taking on Bakersfield College at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, then heading to Santa Monica College on Friday, Oct. 28 for another 6 p.m. start.
The Cougars won't return to their home floor until Wednesday, Nov. 2, for a tilt with Glendale College. That match is also scheduled for a 6 p.m. fist serve. As always admission and live stream broadcast on the Cougars Sports Network are free.
