By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director
College of the Canyons student-athletes Mia Ceja (women's basketball) and Frankie Malagon (baseball) have been named the Jersey Mike's COC Athletic Department's Women's & Men's Student-Athletes of the Week for the period running Jan. 20-25. Ceja and Malagon are the second set of honorees for the 2025 winter/spring session.
Mia Ceja / Women's Basketball
Ceja continued her strong freshman campaign by establishing a new season high point total in the Cougars' overtime road loss at Santa Monica College on Jan. 25.
The guard out of Sylmar High School finished the contest with 31 points in the 75-70 final result. Ceja's total included four three-pointers and 11 converted free throws. She also added two rebounds, a pair of assists and two steals on the defensive end.
On the season, Ceja is averaging 16.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
That point total ranks Ceja sixth in the Western State Conference (WSC). Ceja has reached double-digit totals in all 20 games she has appeared, while topping the 20-point plateau on five occasions.
Frankie Malagon / Baseball
Malagon started the 2025 season by clubbing his first home run in the Cougars' first outing of the year.
The sophomore catcher out of Glendale High School logged starts in both games of COC's home-away series vs. Saddleback College Jan. 24-25.
In the opener, Malagon finished the game 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. His two-run blast in the second inning pulled Canyons to within a run of the defending state champions at 3-2.
The following day Malagon picked up two more hits, including a double, and came around to score on a sac-fly in the fifth inning that cut into the Saddleback lead at 6-3. He also made a spectacular defensive play on a foul ball behind the plate.
