Bio
Dr. Ronald Karzel is originally from Wisconsin. He
attended college at Yale University, and subsequently graduated
from Harvard Medical School in Boston.
After completing his residency training in orthopedic
surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago, Dr. Karzel spent an
additional year as a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Fellow with
the Southern California Orthopedic Institute Medical Group. He then
joined Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI) after
completing his fellowship.
Dr. Karzel has been actively involved in education and
research into shoulder problems. He has a particular interest in
the treatment of rotator cuff and dislocation injuries in the
shoulder, and has helped pioneer several new techniques for the
treatment of these problems. One of his inventions, the Transporter
Device, is used to perform procedures arthroscopically which
previously required open repairs. He has published numerous
scientific journal articles and textbook chapters on subjects such
as knee ligament reconstruction techniques and arthroscopic
shoulder surgery. Dr Karzel has also presented many scientific
papers, and is frequently invited to give instructional course
lectures at national and international orthopedic meetings. He
remains actively involved in several research projects concerning
knee and shoulder injuries.
Dr. Karzel is Board Certified by the American Board of
Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a member of the American Academy of
Orthopaedic Surgeons. He was elected to membership in the American
Shoulder and Elbow Society, and is also a member of the Arthroscopy
Association of North America, currently serving as Chairman of the
Communications Committee, and of the American Orthopaedic Society
for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Karzel is active in sports medicine on the community
level, acting as the Team Orthopedic Surgeon for the College of the
Canyons, as well as Canyon Country, Valencia, Hart and West Ranch
High Schools in the Santa Clarita Valley.
When not at work, Dr. Karzel and his family enjoy sailing,
tennis and skiing.
