Cosumnes River
The COC baseball team lost back-to-back games for just the second time this season, as visiting Cosumnes River College defeated the Cougars 9-6 in 10 innings on Friday to sweep a two-game set.
COC sophomore pitcher Jesse Posey that took the loss despite pitching well enough to win, as Canyons was defeated 9-6 in 10 innings.
Posey left the game in the seventh innings leading 5-4. However, Cosumnes would tie the game in the eighth before exploding for four runs in the top of the 10th inning. Posey's day included four earned runs over six and 2/3 innings to go with six strikeouts.
Friday's loss to Cosumnes River was also significant in that it marked the first time this season that COC right fielder Roy Verdejo did not record a hit for the Cougars.
Verdejo entered Friday's game with an 11-game hit streak — also having hit home runs in four straight games. But both impressive streaks came to end as Verdejo finally had an off day, finishing 0-5.
Canyons (7-5) will look to get back in the win column at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, as the Cougars host WSC rival Antelope Valley College in the team's conference opener at Cougar Field.
