No. 2 Canyons Pushes Win Streak to Nine Games
The Cougars (21-4, 8-2) collected 16 hits in the game, including home runs from Colton Burns and Chad Bible, to defeat L.A. Mission 10-2.
SYLMAR, Calif. — The Southern California No. 2 ranked College of the Canyons baseball team defeated L. A. Mission College 10-2 on Tuesday afternoon for the team's ninth straight victory.
Once again, the Cougar bats came alive scoring double-digit runs for the fourth straight game and the 13th time this season.
Canyons collected 16 hits in the game, including home runs from Colton Burns and Chad Bible, and took advantage of five L. A. Mission defensive errors in scoring 10 runs.
Cougars starting pitcher Jacob Musial (7-1) pitched seven innings allowing five hits, two walks, and one earned run while striking out six Eagles batters.
COC began its onslaught with two outs in the first inning when Roy Verdejo doubled home Bible who walked earlier in the inning to give COC a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Bible singled in Burns from second base after singling earlier in the inning to give COC a 2-1 lead. Bible later scored on a sac fly from Anthony Lepre for a 3-1 COC advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Musial allowed hits to the first two Eagles hitters then induced a double play and struck out Alejandro Vazquez to get out of the jam and end the potential rally.
Bible later capped off his big day at the plate by hitting a solo home run in the eighth inning to give the Cougars an 8-1 lead. Bible finished the game with two hits, three runs and two RBI.
Burns added the exclamation point on the victory with a two-run homer of his own in the ninth inning, scoring JD Krauskopf who singled in the previous at-bat to give COC an insurmountable 10-2 lead.
Burns also had a big day from the leadoff spot going 3-for-6 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in three runs.
Lepre also had three hits, scored once and drove in a run.
Pitcher Zach Hanks pitched a hitless ninth inning to close things out.
The win gives the Cougars a 21-4 overall record and an 8-2 mark against Western State Conference opposition.
COC will now return home for a rematch against L. A. Mission College at Cougar Field on Thursday, April 7. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
