College of the Canyons scored seven runs in the first frame before powering past visiting Saddleback College by an eventual 12-1 final score during the Cougars' home opener on Saturday.
Canyons (1-1) responded in a big way to Friday's 6-2 Opening Day loss vs. this same Saddleback (1-1) squad.
The Cougars brought 12 batters to the plate in the first inning and managed to chase Saddleback starter Kenny Chung (0-1) before he recorded a single out. Alex Sepulveda brought the first run in on an RBI-single that scored Jovan Camacho.
COC then went station to station for several batters with Colin Yeaman, Jake Schwartz, Charlie Rocca, Ryan Camacho and then Jovan Camacho all driving in runs to end the inning ahead 7-0.
Schwartz added another on an RBI-double in the second inning before Rocca teed off on a two-run blast to put Canyons comfortably ahead at 10-0.
Michael Davinni homered for Saddleback to finally get the Bobcats on the board in the sixth inning, but there would be no further runs scored for the visiting side.
Sepulveda added an exclamation point for Canyons with his two-run blast in bottom six to make it a 12-1 lead for the Cougs.
COC starter Tyler Biggs pitched well throughout, picking up his first collegiate win with a five-inning outing that included four hits and four strikeouts.
Malakai Correll Schwartz and Xavier Stoker combined to toss three scoreless innings to close things out. Correll recorded a walk and two strikeouts while Stoker pitched a quick 1-2-3 inning for the final frame that included a strikeout.
