College of the Canyons couldn't keep pace with Consumnes River College on Thursday, dropping an 8-3 affair at Cougar Field in the first of a two-game set vs. the Hawks.
Canyons (1-2) got in trouble early with CRC able to plate runs in the first three frames to take a quick 4-1 advantage.
Michael Grijalva homered for Consumnes River (3-1) in the second inning to put his side ahead 3-0. In the home half, it was Aaron Ruvalcaba's RBI-single that finally put COC on the board at 3-1.
COC starter Malakai Correll (0-1) lasted just two innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and a pair of walks.
The Cougars' bullpen held strong until the Hawks put together a four-run seventh inning that moved the game out of reach at 8-1.
Canyons rallied a bit in the seventh, eventually cashing in on Alex Sepulveda's bases-loaded walk to put the game at 8-2. Later in the inning, Andy Ambriz recorded a sac-fly that brought in Jovan Camacho for a last gasp at 8-3.
William Gonzales (1-1) earned the win for CRC with his five innings of work. The lefty allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Anthony Disantis pitched two and 2/3 shutout innings to close things out for the Hawks.
