SANTA MARIA – College of the Canyons won its second game in as many days, this time handing host Allan Hancock College its first defeat of the season in an 8-3 comeback bid that saw Ryan Camacho's grand slam help the Cougars secure another victory.
It was a quick turnaround for Canyons (3-2) which previously concluded a two-game set with visiting Cosumnes River College on Friday.
COC freshman Tyler Biggs (2-0) won his second straight start with a five-inning outing that included two runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk. The freshman allowed a home run but also struck out three batters.
Biggs trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth innings when the Cougars managed to load the bases in front of Camacho. His big swing put Canyons ahead at 4-2 and fully shifted the momentum to the Cougars' dugout. Camacho finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBIs.
Allan Hancock (4-1) took a run back later in the inning when a hit batter by COC reliever Luke Lemmond brought home a run to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
But Canyons erupted for three more runs in the eighth on a two-run double from Alex Sepulveda and an RBI single from Andy Ambriz to further its lead at 7-3. Camacho's RBI single in the ninth was the final scoring play for a Cougars' lineup that tallied 13 hits.
Malakai Correll and Jake Schwartz combined to toss three shutout innings to close things out vs. the Bulldogs.
AHC starter Luke Kovach was tough in his five innings of work, scattering five hits with two walks while striking out 10 batters. COC did the majority of its damage vs. Bulldogs' reliever Nate Wenzel (0-1) who took the loss.
