College of the Canyons bested L.A. Mission College at Mike Gillespie Field on Thursday, defeating the Eagles 13-7 in an action-packed game.
Canyons (14-15, 6-5) picked up its second win of the three-game series vs. L.A. Mission (11-19, 4-7).
Starting pitcher Oscar Patron, making his 11th start of the season, was able to keep the Eagles at bay through the first four innings befire turning to the bullpen.
COC freshman catcher Domenik Cervantes was hot from the start sending the ball over the fence his first time up to the plate to move COC ahead 1-0, before doing it again in the third inning, this time moving the score to 5-0.
Moments before Cervantes second homer, Canyons first baseman Jake Schwartz tripled down the right field line, bringing in sophomores Charlie Rocca and Angelo Aleman.
However, the Eagles offense answered back and came alive in a four-run fifth inning forcing COC head coach Chris Cota to look to his bullpen. Patron handed the ball to sophomore Luke Lemmond for a brief outing before sophomore Jon Bahr took over for the next three innings.
Just when Mission saw a potential to take the lead, freshman Cougar Andrew Sherell sent the ball over the fence for a three-run home run of his own, advancing Canyons to an 8-4 lead.
The Eagles continued to battle, tacking on a few more runs, but fell short as the Cougars continued to push runners across home plate in what was a five-run eighth inning for COC.
Bahr's performance from the mound earned him the win. He allowed four hits, three earned runs with just as many walks and serving seven strikeouts.
COC freshman pitcher Darren Davis managed the eighth inning before Schwartz took the mound to close out the game.
