VALLEY GLEN — College of the Canyons sophomore Joseph Jasso pitched the whole way while fanning nine batters in leading the Cougars to an 8-2 victory at L.A. College on Thursday,
Canyons (10-18, 4-7) used the victory to end a four-game losing streak and even up its three-game series with the Monarchs (11-18, 4-7).
Jasso (4-4) allowed four hits, issued three walks and hit a batter, but was charged with just an earned run. The sophomore out of South East High School faced 37 batters in the game. Jasso has now recorded at least eight strikeouts in three of his last four outings. Thursday's appearance was also Jasso's second complete game of the season.
LAVC managed to push across an unearned run in the first inning after Canyons committed a pair of infield errors. The Monarchs then moved ahead at 2-0 with an RBI double in the third inning.
COC finally broke through in the fourth inning with a three-run outburst that was sparked by Evan Jaquez' two-out double. Later Reid Farrell doubled home Jaquez to get the Cougars on the board. Isaiah Dominguez took his turn in the inning and promptly answered with a two-run single that moved Canyons ahead 3-2.
Jung Jun Lee tacked on another run with an RBI double that scored Alex Freund and made it a 4-2 Canyons lead.
With Jasso rolling along that would have been more than enough, but the Cougars weren't done yet.
COC added four runs in the eighth with Andrew Sherrell drawing a bases loaded walk and later seeing Farrell came through again with a fielder's choice that resulted in another run. Jaquez moved the score to 7-2 when he was able to get home on a wild pitch. Hunter Essang's RBI double later in the inning ended the scoring at 8-2.
The Monarchs used four pitchers in the game with starter Brandon Hoffmann (2-2) taking the loss after allowing four runs, two earned.
