SANTA MARIA, Calif. — The College of the Canyons men's soccer team snapped a six-game winless streak by cruising to a 4-0 road victory over Allen Hancock College on Tuesday afternoon.
It was the Cougars' first conference victory of the season after a thrilling 3-3 draw in last week's home opener against Santa Barbara.
COC forward Oscar Sanchez opened the scoring for the Cougars in the 22nd minute off an assist from Eddie Gomez. It was Sanchez's second goal of the season.
The Cougars lead 1-0 entering halftime.
In the 54th minute, Sanchez scored his and the Cougars' second goal of the game, this time with a pass from Kaonnye Opazo. Sanchez's third goal of the season gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
COC then doubled its goal total with score plays from Jonathan Trujillo and Iban Alaniz. It was Trujillo's second goal of the season and Alaniz's third, respectively.
Alaniz and Sanchez are tied for the team lead with three goals each.
The shutout was Cougars goalkeeper Christian Arrianga's first shutout of the season.
After scoring only two goals in their first five games, the Cougars have scored seven goals in their last two games.
The win is the first of the season for Phil Marcelin's squad, giving them a record of 1-4-2 and a 1-2-1 record against Western State Conference opponents.
