College of the Canyons scored its first goal in the second minute, then added an insurance score early in the second half to defeat visiting Chaffey College 2-0 on Tuesday night.
The victory for Canyons (3-4-3) put the Cougars back in the win column after suffering a road loss vs. Santa Barbara City College last Friday. The Cougars are now 2-1-1 across their last four matches.
COC freshman Cesar Perez scored his goal in the second minute off a rebound that the Chaffey goalkeeper couldn't corral. Josh Swanson who worked the ball into the box, and fired the first shot, was credited with an assist.
Canyons put together two more quality scoring chances in the half, but had to settle for the 1-0 halftime advantage.
Cougars' goalkeeper Chase Moynihan was strong throughout. He finished the game with seven saves to eventually earn the shutout victory for his side.
COC captain Francisco Ornelas was next to score for the Cougars, with his scoring strike coming byway of an assist from Marcel Palare in the 64th minute.
The goal, which came with Chaffey playing a man down, was Ornelas' third of the season. That tally leads the Cougars.
The second score proved to be enough as Canyons controlled the tempo throughout the remainder of the match to eventually claim victory.
Both sides finished the game with five corner kicks. Three cards were handed out to each team in what has a closely contested match throughout.
Canyons will play a pair of non-conference matches before seeing Western State Conference (WSC), South Division play begin on Oct. 12.
Up next, the Cougars will remain home to host Allan Hancock College at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1.
