College of the Canyons set the tone early in its first Western State Conference (WSC), South Division match, picking up a well-earned 2-0 victory over visiting Citrus College.
Canyons (5-4-4, 1-0) took an early lead in the 13th minute with a goal from sophomore Enrique Gutierrez, his first of the season.
COC held the lead through the first half only to double the score within the first four minutes of the second half.
With an assist from COC center-back Darian Cerin, freshmen Josh Swanson found the back of the net in the 48th minute to push the Cougars closer to victory. Swanson now has five goals on the season.
Citrus (2-10, 0-1) had a few opportunities to level the playing field toward the end of the match, but Canyons goalkeeper Julian Villafan worked to earn the shut out. Villafan recorded a full 90 minutes with four saves.
A well-organized defensive effort for the Cougars translated well to their offensive attacks, ultimately paving the way for their first conference victory.
Canyons is now unbeaten in its last four matches, going 3-0-1 during that span.
The Cougars will defend their home turf on Friday, Oct. 15, hosting Glendale Community College (2-6-6, 0-1). First touch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
