College of the Canyons halted a brief three-game slide with a 2-1 home victory over Allan Hancock College on Tuesday, coming away with a win in its final non-conference match.
Canyons (6-5) got on the board first in the 10th minute when freshman Frank Alvarez made a nice move on the Allan Hancock defender and finished the run with his fourth goal of the season.
Near the end of the opening half it was sophomore Anthony Landeros, who returned to the pitch for COC after a six-game absence, scoring what proved to be the game winner in the 42nd minute. Landeros' goal was assisted by Christian Lanzas-Castillo and sent Canyons into the break with a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars outshot the Bulldogs by a 12-6 margin in the first half while earning three corner kicks. Those trends continued throughout the match as Canyons finished with seven more shots and two extra corners compared to the AHC (3-7-1) side.
Adam Soria (4-3) earned the win for Canyons with a seven-save effort, surrendering just the lone goal to the Bulldogs' Diego Cardenas in the 58th minute.
That score narrowed the Cougars advantage and set the tone for hard-fought second half.
Canyons will begin Western State Conference (WSC), South Division competition on Friday, Oct. 6 at L.A. Mission College. First touch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
