Cougars Slip Past Antelope Valley College

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – College of the Canyons sophomore Karlee Bickford smashed two home runs on Thursday afternoon to help the Cougars narrowly get by Antelope Valley College, 10-8, at Whitten Field.
Bickford, who was 3-of-4 for the afternoon, hit her third and fourth home runs of her career and collected three RBIs in the process. Kori Cochran also collected three hits, while Ashley Sandoval-Colon and Kaitlyn Shreves had two hits apiece.
Canyons scored in the opening frame to make it 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Sandoval-Colon and Cochran started the inning with a duo of singles, which were later brought in to score later by Nicole Maliniemi who turned in a RBI single to right center.
Canyons responded in the bottom portion of the third and went off for six runs and an 8-3 lead. Bickford hit one of her two home runs following a Cochran single, giving Canyons a 4-3 lead. Kaitlyn Shreves continued adding runs to COC's score with a two-RBI double and Sandoval-Colon followed up with a two-RBI triple.
Bickford posted her second homer of the afternoon in the fourth inning to give Canyons a 9-4 advantage.
The Marauders tried a comeback in the fifth, notching five runs on three hits to trail COC by one run, 9-8. Canyons quickly shut that down with the entrance of Milana Casillas in the circle and an insurance run from Maliniemi in the sixth inning.
Starter Morgan Simmons tossed 4.0 innings, giving up eight runs on 11 hits to improve to 7-5. Casillas earned her first save of her collegiate career after providing three innings of hitless and scoreless relief.
The Cougars will travel to Riverside City College on Friday, March 28 for two non-conference games.
