Canyons Registers Second Shutout of Day with 16-0 Trouncing of Moorpark
Sophomore catcher Lauren Anderson belts two more home runs and finishes 3-for-3
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The College of the Canyons softball team scored 21 runs in sweeping a doubleheader on Sunday by taking down Southwestern in the early game, and defeating Moorpark College 16-0 in a five-inning afternoon affair.
The Cougars dominated all aspects of the game. COC pitchers allowed only two hits, while the Canyons lineup slugged four doubles and four home runs in the contest.
COC starter Milana Casillas, pitched three innings and struck out one batter. Reliever Ashley Russo dominated the following two innings while striking out three batters.
The middle of the order abused Raider pitching with the 3-4-5 hitters – Erika Esparza, Lauren Anderson and Alija Ramirez –finishing a combined 9-for-10 with seven RBIs in the game.
Esparza finished with two hits and scored three runs, snapping a brief 0-for-9 slump over the last two games.
Anderson continued her hot swinging, finishing 3-for-3 while belting out two more home runs and four RBIs. Anderson, the team's everyday catcher, leads the Cougars with five homers, and has seven RBIs to go with a .577 batting average on the season.
Ramirez had her biggest offensive output of the year vs. Moorpark, going 4-for-4 and collecting three RBIs.
With the win, the Cougars improve their record to 6-1-1 on the season.
COC will next take on Santiago Canyon College for a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28.
