Canyons Keeps Southwestern Scoreless in 5-0 Victory
Pitcher Kaitlyn Reed tosses a shutout for fifth win of the season.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Kaitlyn Reed's shutout of Southwestern College propelled the College of the Canyons softball team to a 5-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday — its fourth straight victory.
Reed scattered four hits and walked one batter over seven shutout innings for her fifth win of the season.
Canyons jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, scoring three runs off Southwestern starter Maria Aguirre.
COC catcher Lauren Anderson led the Cougar bats going 3-for-4 including a solo home run – her third on the year. Interestingly enough, all of her RBIs thus for this season have come via solo home runs.
Shortstop Cheyenne Steward collected two more RBI on two hits and earned a walk against Southwestern.
On the season, Steward has 10 RBI with an impressive .555 batting average.
The victory gave the Cougars a 7-1-1 record on the season, heading into the second game of the doubleheader vs. Moorpark College.
