Canyons Beats Santiago Canyon 1-0 in First Game of Doubleheader
The win is COC's sixth straight, and third straight shutout.
ORANGE, Calif. — Right fielder Jennifer Metcalf's RBI single in the top of the third inning and another stellar performance from starting pitcher Kaitlyn Reed was all the College of the Canyons softball team needed to eek out a 1-0 victory over Santiago Canyon College in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Cougars couldn't take advantage of their 10 hits in the game, stranding 13 base runners over seven innings.
Reed frustrated the Santiago Canyons bats even more, however, allowing just four hits and two walks over seven shutout innings to earn her sixth victory of the season.
Santiago Canyon tried to rally in the final innings, leaving a potential tying run on the basepaths in both the sixth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, Santiago Canyon's Kaitlyn Lanksbury reached base on a COC throwing error. But Reed would strike out the final Santiago Canyon batter to end a final rally attempt, and the game.
COC catcher Lauren Anderson continued her hot hitting going 3-for-3 with a walk and two doubles.
The win represented the team's sixth straight victory, and boosted COC's record to 7-1-1 on the season heading into the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
