Canyons Falls in Battle of No. 7 Ranked Teams
The two teams — which share a No. 7 state ranking — combined to score 23 runs in seven innings as Lauren Anderson drives in four runs.
In a wild, offensive heavy game, the No. 7 College of the Canyons softball team lost 14-9 to No. 7 Citrus College, snapping the Cougars' six-game winning streak.
At least one run was scored in all but one inning. The second inning saw a combined 11 runs by both teams.
With so much offense the two teams — which entered the game tied at No. 7 in the 3CFCA rankings — would see their pitching staffs battered. Unfortunately for COC, it was starting pitcher Kaitlyn Reed that took the biggest hits early.
Reed lasted only an inning and allowed five earned runs on four hits and two walks before exiting the game with a stiff back.
Milana Casillas entered to pitch and finished the game grinding out six grueling innings in which she allowed 14 hits, four walks and nine earned runs. Casillas was tagged with the loss to boot.
Included among the massive offensive output was he performance of COC catcher Lauren Anderson, which stood out once again.
The cleanup hitter went 3-for-4, including a clutch two-run home run in the fourth inning that tied the game. In all, Anderson collected four RBIs.
Anderson's eight homers this season lead the team and the Western State Conference. She has 20 RBIs on the season to also lead the team in that category.
First baseman Kaitlyn Shreves also recorded three hits on the day, crossing home plate twice and knocking in another run. Third baseman Julianna Carlos also recorded two RBIs on a 1-for-3 day.
The loss drops the Cougars overall record to 13-3-1 and 3-1 against conference opposition.
The Cougars will next host Bakersfield College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 17.
