Cougar Offense Explodes in 12-3 Victory Over Bakersfield College
COC leadoff hitter Cheyenne Steward led the Cougars going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
An offensive onslaught and a solid pitching performance by freshman Ashley Russo made short work of Bakersfield College, as the Cougars won 12-3 in five innings in the first game of an afternoon doubleheader
Russo was credited with her third victory of the season, pitching all five innings, allowing six hits and only one earned run while striking out two Renegade hitters.
The Cougars found themselves down two after the first inning, but erupted for six runs in the second inning. The Canyons advantage only would snowball from there.
COC freshman shortstop Cheyenne Steward put the Cougars on the board in the second inning by singling home Emily Smith and Milana Casillas to tie the game at 2-2.
Steward and Katelyne Lent would then score on a throwing error by the Bakersfield infield.
COC sophomore catcher Lauren Anderson then tripled home Jennifer Metcalf and the rout was on with the Cougars leading 5-2 at that point.
Anderson's triple was her first of the season and gives her 17 extra base hits on the campaign good for a mighty 1.169 slugging percentage.
In all, the Canyons scored six runs on only three hits in the inning and were aided by two Bakersfield fielding errors. The Cougars weren't done either.
COC would score three runs in each of the following innings to cap off the 12-3 rout.
Steward, COC's everyday leadoff hitter, led the way for the Cougars going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
The victory gives head coach Jon Wissmath's club a 13-3-1 overall record and a 4-1 record in the Western State Conference, Blue Division heading into game two of the doubleheader.
