Canyons Sweeps Doubleheader From Bakersfield with 7-3 Victory
COC center fielder Erica Esparza goes 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
The College of the Canyons softball team capped off a doubleheader sweep of Bakersfield College on Tuesday, with a 7-3 game two victory over the Renegades.
Canyons (14-3-1, 5-1) scored a total of 19 runs in two games vs. Bakersfield, with the top of the Cougar lineup once again shinning bright.
Freshman shortstop Cheyenne Steward recorded two hits — including a triple — two runs and two RBIs from the leadoff position, while No. 2 hitter Erica Esparza tallied three RBIs on a 1-for-3 day.
The Cougars trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before erupting for five runs on three hits — including RBIs from Milana Casillas, Esparza and Emily Smith
COC added two more runs on Steward's RBI triple in the bottom of sixth inning, providing all the offense head coach John Wissmath would need to earn the win.
Casillas also pitched Canyons to the win by starting the game and lasting five innings, allowing two earned runs and recording four strikeouts.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Russo then entered the game and closed out the final two frames, strikeout out two batters in the process.
Canyons will next host Santa Monica College at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19.
