Cougars Claim 15-1 Home Win Over Santa Monica
Canyons erupts for 14-run third inning and never looks back.
It took five innings for the College of the Canyons softball team to claim victory over Santa Monica on Thursday, with the Cougars cruising to a 15-1 home win.
Canyons took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Juliana Carlos scored on an RBI ground out from Milana Casillas.
That score proved to be the beginning of an avalanche, as COC followed suit in the third inning with 14 runs scored.
COC catcher Lauren Anderson opened up the frame's scoring with an RBI single, which was then followed by a two-RBI single from Jennifer Metcalf and a 2-RBI triple from Carlos.
After scoring the inning's first run, Ashley Russo singled to center field to score two more Cougars to push the score to 8-1.
Later in the inning, Erica Esparza added the exclamation point with a three-run home run.
Esparza finished thengame 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs. Teammates Anderson, Metcalf and Russo joined Esparza as four of COC's players to finish with multi-hit games.
The Cougars (15-3-1) are currently ranked No. 7 in the state of California, and have scored 185 runs in 22 games.
