No. 4 Canyons Gets 6-4 Non-Conference Win Over Riverside College
Steward and Anderson provide the bulk of Cougars offense in combining to drive in five runs.
The No. 4 state ranked College of the Canyons softball team picked up a non-conference victory over visiting Riverside College on Saturday, with the Cougars holding off a late charge to win 6-4.
Canyons (18-4-1, 9-2) scored first on an RBI single from Lauren Anderson in the bottom of the first inning.
The Tigers struck back with runs in the second and fourth innings to take a brief 2-1 lead against sophomore starter Milana Casillas. However, the Cougars erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead for good.
Casillas recorded an RBI triple to get things started for the Cougars. One batter later shortstop Cheyenne Steward slugged a two-run homer, which was followed by another two-run shot from catcher Lauren Anderson later in the inning.
Riverside would strike back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but it was too little too late.
Steward finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Anderson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
From the circle, Casillas surrendered two runs in four innings of work, before turning things over to freshman pitcher Ashley Russo.
Russo would allow two runs over her two innings to eventually earn the win. Kaitlyn Reed then entered the game to pitch a perfect seventh inning and record the save.
The win is COC's second in a row, and sixth in its last seven games.
The Cougars will next play in the Ventura College Spring Games with contests scheduled against tourney host Ventura and Cypress College on Sunday, March 29.
