No. 4 Canyons Earns 4-1 Win Over L.A. Mission
COC shortstop Cheyenne Steward slugs two home runs to lead Cougars to victory,
After having its five-game win streak broken up earlier in the week, the No. 4 College of the Canyons softball team got back on track with a 4-1 home win over L.A. Mission on Thursday.
Canyons (22-5-1, 10-3) surrendered the lone Eagles run in the first inning before storming back with four unanswered runs of its own.
In the bottom of the third inning COC shortstop Cheyenne Steward put the Cougars on the board with a two-run home run that plated Alija Ramirez.
Three innings later Steward blasted her second home run, a solo shot, over the center field wall to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead.
Steward, who has swung a hot bat for most of the season, finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
COC third baseman Julianna Carlos recorded an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to close out the scoring for the Caougars.
In the circle, COC freshman Ashley Russo had another strong outing, lasting five and 1/3 innings to earn the win while striking out four batters.
Canyons remains in second place in the Western State Conference, Blue Division trailing conference rival Citrus College by one game.
The Cougars will next travel to Citrus for an afternoon doubleheader Tuesday, April 7.
