COC Softball Has Eight Players Named to All-WSC Team - Anderson Named Player of the Year
The sophomore catcher is also named an All-State Honoree after batting .562 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs through the regular season.
The College of the Canyons softball team had eight players earn all-WSC honors including conference player of the year Lauren Anderson, who was also named an All-State Team selection.
Anderson enjoyed a very productive season for the Cougars.
At the plate, the sophomore batted .562 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs on the season to lead the Cougars in all three categories. Those totals were also good enough to rank first, second and third, respectively, in the WSC.
Primarily batting in the cleanup spot, Anderson recorded a hit in all but four of COC's games this season, including a 19-game hit streak that lasted from Feb. 7 to March 24.
She finished the regular season with the team lead in hits (73), doubles (19), on-base percentage (.613) and slugging percentage (1.031) — while striking out just five times.
Anderson finished second on the team in runs (35), triples (3), and had multi-hit games in 27 of the team's 39 regular season contests.
Behind the plate she committed just one error the entire season, and caught all four of the team's shutout victories, including a span of three straight game from Feb. 22-28.
Along the way she also helped COC pitchers to a team ERA of 3.18.
She is joined by first baseman Kaitlyn Shreves (.409/31 RBIs/29 runs) as a first team All-WSC selection.
Earning second team All-WSC honors for the Cougars were shortstop Cheyenne Steward (.489/9 HR/39 RBIs/54 runs/11 stolen bases), pitcher Ashley Russo (12-4/2.42 ERA/55 Ks) and outfielder Jennifer Metcalf (.305/4 HR/36 RBIs/34 runs/9 stolen bases).
Steward was also named an All-SoCal selection.
Pitcher/outfielder Milana Casillas (8-3/4.00 ERA/.303 avg.) infielder Julianna Carlos (.304/24 RBIs/14 runs) and outfielder Erica Esparza (.289/2 HR/18 RBIs/25 runs) were each named honorable mention All-WSC.
Canyons (28-10-1) finished the regular season as the No. 10 ranked team in the state (No. 5 in SoCal) and the second place finisher in the WSC, Blue Division.
No. 6 seed COC will host No. 11 Cerritos College in the first round of the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs, begining May, 2.
