No. 11 College of the Canyons upped its current unbeaten streak to six straight after sweeping a home doubleheader vs. College of the Redwoods on Monday, in a pair of decisive victories.
Canyons (10-2-1, 1-0) was in control throughout the day, taking a 3-0 first inning lead in the opener and never looking back.
COC sophomore Alexis Ramirez (7-0) took over from there, keeping the Corsairs scoreless, and largely off the base paths, for the next five innings. She allowed one hit and issued a lone walk, while striking out three.
Freshman Katie Tax pitched one inning of scoreless relief to close out the Corsairs.
Sienna Vannoy was the offensive leader for Canyons in the first game. The freshman finished 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs, a run and a walk. Her RBI-double in the fifth put the Cougars ahead 6-0.
In the next inning Gabrielle Padilla recorded an RBI-double of her own, before Melanie Abzun ended the game with a walk-off home run to give COC the 8-0 six inning victory.
Abzun quickly followed up those heroics with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first in game two. That big knock helped the Cougars jump out to an early 5-0 lead, with Danielle Chatman and Vannoy also recording RBIs in the rally.
Redwoods (8-10) pitcher Shannon Palmer tried to help her own cause with a two-run home run in the second inning that made it 5-2. But in COC's next trip to the plate the Cougars pushed across five more runs on RBIs from Chatman, Vannoy and Heidi Ludy to make it 10-2.
Vannoy enjoyed another 2-for-2 outing, to go with three more RBIs and two more runs. Chatman finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Ludy was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
Abzun was 3-for-3 with three runs on top of her leadoff home run. Azmarheen Anderson had a 3-for-3 day, adding two runs and an RBI in the bottom of the fifth that ended the game at 12-4.
Sarah Wilson (3-2) earned the win, and was charged with three earned runs. Ramirez tossed an inning of relief and allowed a run.
Canyons will next host conference opponent Victor Valley College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 14. Games are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
