Lady Cougars Can't Get Past Fullerton
No. 12 Canyons (23-19, 10-4) is eliminated in opening round of CCCAA Regional Playoffs by No. 5 Fullerton College.
FULLERTON — No. 12 College of the Canyons dropped its best-of-three CCCAA SoCal Regional playoff series to No. 5 Fullerton College 2-0 to end its 2019 campaign.
Canyons (23-19, 10-4) made some early noise in the series opener by jumping out to an early first-inning advantage, but didn't score another run the rest of the way.
COC sophomore Micayla Aguilar put the Lady Cougars on the board 1-0 in the opener with a first inning RBI single that plated leadoff batter Rena Edwards.
Two batters later freshman Camryn Webb, at the plate with the bases loaded, was hit by the pitch to bring home Kayla Yamane and give Canyons a brief 2-0 lead.
Fullerton (35-6, 17-4) cut that lead in half with an RBI double in the home half of the inning before evening the game at 2-2 in the fourth on a Canyons error.
The final blow came via Hornet leadoff batter Sabrina Anguiano's two-run shot in the sixth that gave Fullerton its 4-2 final score.
Sophomore hurler Megan Wilson was charged with the loss for Canyons after pitching all six innings. She allowed four runs, walked three and struck out two.
Fullerton pitcher Jessica Lopez came on in relief of starter LuLu Vasquez to get the win. Lopez pitched two frames, allowing one hit and issuing one walk.
In Saturday's game two matchup Fullerton pushed across four runs in the first off Wilson and never looked back. The Hornets also scored a run in the third and added four more in the fourth to end the game 8-0 after five innings.
Lopez (17-4) started the game and largely kept the Cougars off the base paths, allowing just two hits and striking out six to pick up her second win in as many games.
Aguilar's leadoff single in the fifth inning broke up Lopez' no-hit bid. Torres singled later in the inning to give Canyons a brief spark but the Cougars could get no closer.
COC finished the regular season as runner-up in the Western State Conference (WSC), East Division after winning the conference a season ago. The trip to the postseason was the program's seventh straight, all under head coach John Wissmath.
The Lady Cougars had nine players earn All-WSC, East Division honors including co-Player of the Year and All-State team honoree Sierra Boyajian.
