By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director

The Cougars used a five-run fifth inning to surge past visiting Glendale College at Whitten Field on Tuesday, later emerging with a shortened 9-1 victory in six innings.

Canyons (21-14-1, 6-4) has now won back-to-back games, and three of its last four, after splitting a weekend doubleheader at Long Beach City College. The Cougar lineup has plated at least nine runs in each of those victories. COC ranks fifth in the WSC in runs scored at 218.

COC freshman Samantha Flores recorded her third straight start for the Cougars and was effective throughout. Flores (9-10) scattered six hits and issued four walks to allow the single earned run. She also struck out four batters along the way.

Julia Fuentes gave Canyons the 1-0 advantage on an RBI-single in the second innings.

After Glendale (9-29, 1-10) briefly tied the game at 1-1 in the third the Cougar lineup erupted for a five-run inning that gave clear control to the COC side.

Alyssa Silva started the scoring when she came in on a passed ball. Allyson Melgar's two-run double kept the party going and put the game at 4-1.

Brianne Tall was next in line with a run-scoring double of her own before Gabriela Gonzalez capped the rally with an RBI-single that brought Tall back into the dugout at 6-1.

Elizabeth Rowe brought home another on an RBI-ground ball that allowed Fuentes to score. In the sixth it was Silva who recorded a double and scored on the same sequence thanks to some help from the Glendale infield.

Fuentes then ended all doubt with a double to left field that made it a 9-1 game and signaled the early exit for the Vaqueros.

The Cougars are currently third in the Western State Conference (WSC), East Division standings behind conference leader Bakersfield College (30-6, 10-0) and second place Antelope Valley College (25-10, 8-1)
