Lady Cougars Softball Downs Antelope Valley 7-1

LANCASTER — No. 15 College of the Canyons won its second straight this time taking a 7-1 road win at Antelope Valley College on Tuesday.
Canyons (10-3, 4-1) continues to sit in the second spot of the Western State Conference (WSC), East Division standings behind Bakersfield College (10-6, 3-0).
Antelope Valley (9-8, 2-2) scored its lone run in the first inning to tie the game at 1-1. COC had opened the scoring when Schalyn Rhambo came around to score on an RBI double from Alyssa Silva.
Both sides stayed quiet until the fifth inning when Julia Fuentes singled home Ashlynn Heck to take a 2-1 advantage.
COC scored two more in the sixth and then capped the action with a three-run seventh inning for a 7-1 final score.
AVC aided the Cougars by committing four errors in the game and were limited to just four hits on the offensive side.
Canyons starter Allyson Melgar (7-2) pitched the entire way to get the win allowing the single unearned run on four hits and three walks. Her seven strikeouts vs. AVC were a season high.
Emmeliz Sera (1-3) took the loss after allowing two runs in three innings of work. Antelope Valley used four pitchers in the game.

Upcoming Schedule
COC is back at Whitten Field vs. conference opponent L.A. Mission College on Thursday, March 9 at 2:30 p.m.
Canyons will then play in a non-conference doubleheader at Cypress College on Saturday, March 11. Games are slated for 12 and 2 p.m.
